A Look Back: How UPS Became a Trusted Shipping Partner For Many American Businesses & Consumers
Did you know that UPS started over a hundred years ago as a small messenger service? That’s right! Before it became the global shipping giant we know today, UPS began as a humble startup, just like many of the businesses we serve here at The Postal Spot.
Back in 1907, a 19-year-old named James E. Casey borrowed $100 to start a bicycle messenger service in Seattle, Washington. He called it the American Messenger Company, and its main job was delivering packages, notes, and even lunch orders around the city. With a focus on reliable service and fair pricing, Casey and his small team quickly built a strong reputation.
As businesses grew and the need for package delivery increased, so did the company.
Over the next several decades, UPS became one of the most trusted names in shipping because of its constant innovation. They introduced air delivery in 1929, expanded across the country in the 1950s, and eventually went global in the 1970s. Today, UPS delivers over 24 million packages a day to more than 220 countries and territories.
It’s amazing to see how a small, local business grew into one of the world’s largest delivery networks—something that inspires us here at The Postal Spot as we work to serve our own community with convenient, reliable shipping solutions.
Up next, let’s dive into the different UPS shipping services you can use right here at The Postal Spot!

What About Large or Odd-Sized Packages?
Got a big, bulky, or oddly shaped package? No problem! UPS handles oversized and oddly shaped items, but there are some important things to know:
- Maximum package weight: 150 lbs.
- Maximum package length: 108 inches (longest side).
- Maximum girth (length + 2x width + 2x height): 165 inches.
- Odd-shaped packages (like tubes or irregular boxes) may require additional handling fees.
💡 Tip: If you’re unsure about your package size or weight, bring it to The Postal Spot! We’ll measure it for you and let you know if any special handling fees apply.
Choosing the Right Shipping Materials

Poly Mailer vs. Shipping Box
- Poly Mailers are best for soft, non-fragile items like clothing, small accessories, and paperwork. They are lightweight and often cheaper to ship.
- Shipping Boxes are ideal for fragile, valuable, or bulky items that need extra protection.
Protecting Your Package
- Use bubble wrap, packing peanuts, or foam to cushion fragile items.
- Avoid overpacking—a snug fit is safer and keeps costs down.
- Make sure the box is sturdy and sealed properly to withstand handling.
Things to Remember:
- Lighter packages generally cost less.
- Smaller packages take up less space, which can reduce dimensional charges.
- The farther your package travels, the higher the shipping rate is likely to be.
Need help deciding how to pack your item? Just ask us at The Postal Spot! We’re happy to help you pick the best shipping materials for your needs.

While UPS is a great choice for shipping just about anything, there are some restrictions on what can and cannot be sent through their network. Whether it’s hazardous materials, perishable items, or high-value shipments, knowing the rules ahead of time can save you from delays or unexpected issues.
At The Postal Spot, we’re here to help! If you’re unsure about your package, just give us a call or stop by, and we’ll make sure your shipment follows UPS guidelines.
What You CAN’T Ship with UPS
There are some items that UPS prohibits entirely due to safety, legal, or regulatory reasons. These include:
- Firearms & Ammunition (except for approved shippers) – sorry The Postal Spot is not authorized to ship firearms
- Illegal Substances (no shipping of drugs or other controlled substances)
- Hazardous Waste
- Explosives & Fireworks
- Human Remains (including ashes)
- Cash & Money Orders
- Loose Diamonds & Precious Stones
- Counterfeit Goods
💡 Tip: If you’re shipping something valuable, like jewelry or electronics, UPS does offer declared value coverage for added protection.
Items That Require Special Handling or Restrictions
Some items can be shipped, but they come with certain conditions.
Lithium Batteries – Can You Ship Them with UPS?
Yes, UPS does ship lithium batteries, but they must follow strict guidelines:
- Lithium batteries inside a device (like a laptop or phone) – Allowed but must be packed securely.
- Standalone lithium batteries (like power banks, spare batteries) – Often restricted for air shipments.
- Damaged or defective lithium batteries – Not allowed to be shipped at all.
- Special labeling & packaging – All battery shipments must have a hazardous material label.
Not sure about your shipment? Call or bring it to The Postal Spot, and we’ll help you determine if it can be shipped!
Liquids, Perishables & Temperature-Sensitive Items
- Liquids – Allowed if properly sealed and packed to prevent leaks.
- Perishable Items – UPS does not provide refrigeration, so food and other perishable goods must be packed with ice packs or dry ice.
- Alcohol – Can only be shipped by licensed shippers and to approved locations.
Documents & Legal Papers
- Passports & Certain Legal Documents – UPS does not allow the shipping of some official documents (like visas, birth certificates) due to the risk of loss.
💡 Tip: Need to ship important legal papers? Ask us about certified mail or secure shipping options!
What Happens if You Ship a Restricted Item?
If a package contains prohibited or restricted items, UPS may:
1. Refuse to accept the package.
2. Return it to the sender.
3. Apply fines or penalties, depending on the situation.
Duties, Tariffs & Import Fees – What You Need to Know

- Are set by the country receiving the package
- Must be paid by the recipient
- Are not included in the UPS shipping quote
At The Postal Spot, we’ll help with customs forms, but we can’t calculate duties or tariffs. It’s important that the person receiving the shipment is prepared to pay these fees when the package arrives.
If the recipient refuses or fails to pay:
- UPS may return the package to the sender (return costs apply)
- Customs may delay, hold, or destroy the item
Address & Contact Info – Double Check Before You Ship
One of the easiest ways to avoid delivery issues is by making sure the address and contact information are 100% accurate. This applies to both domestic and international shipments!
Before shipping, confirm:
- Full recipient name
- Complete street address (including apartment/suite #)
- City, state, ZIP code (or country, province, and postal code)
- Recipient’s phone number and email address
Postal Spot Tip: If you are not sure about the address, find out from the recipient if there is a UPS location nearby. Sometimes there are postal businesses in their area that are like the Postal Spot. Meaning they can accept and ship packages for UPS and Fedex.
You can always ship to that location and have them pick it up there. Some services will allow pick up for free, some will have a charge. They should be aware of, and research that before using the address.
A quick call to that location would be very beneficial to make sure they have a pick up service and any cost involved. They may also have restrictions on box sizes, so it best to call and make sure the package meets their criteria.
If there’s a problem or a customs delay, UPS needs a way to contact the person receiving the package. An incomplete address or missing contact info could lead to delivery delays, returns, or even lost packages. Ship with Confidence at The Postal Spot
